Treatments

You can find more information about some of the treatments we offer below.

  • The ECT (Electroconvulsive Therapy) Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham was established more than 30 years ago. ECT is used in the treatment of severe depression and other psychiatric disorders. At the University of Alabama, ECT is conducted under the direct supervision of a psychiatrist and anesthesiologist, and we apply modern monitoring devices and anesthetic medications to provide safe and effective treatments.

  • UAB has launched its Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) program. rTMS has been studied for many years, and as of October 8, 2008, a rTMS device, manufactured by Neuronetics Inc. has been approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States for use in adult patients with major depression who have previously tried medication and not improved satisfactorily. This non-invasive treatment for depression uses highly focused, pulsed magnetic fields to stimulate function in targeted brain regions.
