Ninan P.T., Shelton R.C., Bao W., Guico-Pabia C.J. BDNF, interleukin-6, and salivary cortisol levels in depressed patients treated with desvenlafaxine. Progr Neuropsychopharmacol Biol Psychiatry (in press).
This project showed that three biomarkers of depression, brain derived neurotrophic factor, interleukin-6, and cortisol did not predict response to the antidepressant Desvenlafaxine.
The state of biomarker research in depression is reviewed, particularly the use of biomarkers to predict treatment responses.
Readers will better understand the limitations of current biomarker research, particularly as relates to antidepressant treatment response.
