Information for Collaborating Researchers
Managed by the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology, the Alabama Brain Collection (ABC) is a resource that promotes brain tissue research in schizophrenia and related disorders. We encourage neuroscientists and psychiatrists throughout the world to become collaborators in the use of this tissue.
The brain tissue collected by the Alabama Brain Collection is done in collaboration with the Alabama Organ Center. A strong emphasis is placed on the preservation of high-quality tissue samples and the acquisition of detailed clinical information on all cases.
All collaborating researchers interested in obtaining postmortem tissue from the ABC must submit an application to the ABC Steering Committee. Because postmortem tissue from patients with mental illnesses and from normal controls is limited, strict guidelines are followed to ensure that all tissue is being used in the most advantageous way. The conditions listed below in the “Application for Tissue” and the “Collaboration Agreement” are intended to establish mutually beneficial collaboration with all researchers who are using the tissue
