Brief Bio

Dr. Jaroslaw Zmijewski completed his undergraduate education in Biology, graduating from the University of Gdansk. He than completed his PhD training in the Department of Biotechnology, which is dedicated to the integration of research between the University of Gdansk and Medical School in Gdansk. Dr. Zmijewski undertook postdoctoral training in the Department of Pathology at UAB and thereafter joined the Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Zmijewski is also a member of the Center for Free Radical Biology at UAB.  

Academic & Research Interests

My research interests concern the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of inflammatory conditions frequently associated with organ dysfunction, including acute lung injury (ALI). We investigate the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in modulating proinflammatory signaling cascades in neutrophils, macrophages and other cell types to understand the redox dependent regulation of signaling pathways, including activation of the transcription factor, Nuclear Factor kappa B (NF-kB). Recently, we have identified that hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide anion have opposite effects in modulating  neutrophil activation. In particular, increased intracellular steady state levels of H2O2 prevented LPS-induced induction of the NF-kB signaling cascade and diminished production of proinflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-a and  MIP-2. We have found that the anti-inflammatory actions of H2O2 are  associated with inhibition of ubiquitination and degradation of IkBa in LPS stimulated neutrophils as well as in the lungs of LPS-treated mice with constitutively inactive catalase.                 

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and its participation in innate immune responses is a current area of interest. Although AMPK plays an essential role in regulating glucose and lipid metabolism, recent studies, including results obtained in our laboratory, indicate that activation of AMPK can diminish acute inflammation. We have shown that activation of AMPK can prevent LPS-induced cytokine production by neutrophils and also diminishes acute lung injury in LPS-treated mice. The mechanism of AMPK dependent inhibition of neutrophil proinflammatory activation is currently under investigation, including identification of the pro- and anti-inflammatory and fibrogenic signaling pathways targeted by AMPK.
