  • Includes detailed phenotypical information so specific patient cohorts can be identified and studied.
  • P-TREC Application - A new software product designed to facilitate the tracking and analysis of information collected on interstitial lung disease (ILD) patients, lung transplant, COPD and pediatric and cystic fibrosis (CF) patients of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Developed and maintained by the UAB Division of Preventive Medicine's Information Systems Group under the direction of Dr. Joao A. de Andrade, Dr. Keith M. Wille and Dr. Amit Gaggar of the UAB Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine. The application consists of a SQL Server database (back end) with an Access user interface (front end).  The data and the interface are organized into modules:  ILD, Transplant, Pediatrics, COPD and CF.  The majority of patients covered are associated with only one of these modules but there are some patients included in both. 
    The following general types of information are included:  
  • Basic patient demographics
  • Record of patient visits
  • Record of patient deaths
  • Record of patient consents for use of information and various types of specimens
  • Record of patient specimens sent to the Biospecimen Repository
  • Patient exposures to tobacco, drugs, and hazardous occupational conditions
  • Patient diagnoses and symptoms
  • A wide variety of patient lab test results
  • Patient pathologies and biopsy results
  • Treatments (procedures, medications) prescribed for patients
  • Complications resulting from patient treatments


P-TREC security features:

  • Dedicated server system to which only authorized users are granted access.
  • The SQL Server database security limits access to the raw information to authorized users.
  • The user interface has two levels of access control:
  • Users are granted overall access rights (Unlimited, Module Administrative, Updater, Read Only, or None) to the application itself which are managed through a login process and the security administration built into MS Access. Only developers have unlimited access, which can only be assigned by another developer. Other users do not have direct access to any of the database tables from the user interface.
  • Users are granted data access rights by program modules which are administered through the interface's own programming.
  • Protected Health Information (PHI) as defined by HIPAA is further secured by
  • Encryption of the data for storage within the database; and
  • Limitation of displays of this information in plain-language format to a single screen within the application. All other displays of patient information are de-identified as per HIPAA requirements.
