Lung transplantation is a treatment option for selected patients whose lung function cannot be improved by other means. It has been shown to increase survival of patients with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and is indicated to improve the survival and the quality of life of patients with a number of other end-stage pulmonary conditions such as COPD, Cystic Fibrosis and Pulmonary Hypertension. Currently, there are about 65 active lung transplantation centers in the United States. Since 1989, UAB has performed 360 lung transplants, which places us among the 10 busiest centers in the Nation.
