Lung volume reduction helps certain patients with emphysema to regain some lung function. It does not help all patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or even all patients with emphysema.

A recent study, the National Emphysema Therapy Trial, showed that a subgroup of patients benefit from lung volume reduction surgery. The benefit included improvement in lung function tests, exercise tolerance, measures of quality of life and possibly a reduction in the risk of dying over the next four years.

At UAB, we will evaluate patients and offer lung volume reduction surgery or other suitable procedures as an option to those meeting the appropriate criteria.
