Susan M. Harding, MD, Director and Member of the ABIM-Board of Sleep Medicine
The UAB Sleep/Wake Disorders Center relocated to newly renovated quarters on the 7th floor of UAB Highlands Hospital in June 2008, and has the objective to provide the highest quality evaluation and treatment to patients with sleep disorders, utilizing state of the art technology and equipment. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of sleep medicine, the Center's four physicians and nurse practitioner represent an array of medical specialties, including cardiovascular medicine, neurology, and pulmonary and critical care medicine.
The Center performs more than 1200 diagnostic tests each year and also serves as the outpatient clinic setting for sleep disorder patients, where both new and follow-up patients are seen and evaluated. The Center provides overnight testing Sunday through Thursday evenings.
The UAB Sleep-Wake Disorders Center also has the responsibility to maintain a comprehensive and integrated sleep medicine education program with learning opportunities for medical students, primary care residents and fellows. In 2007, an ACGME-accredited sleep medicine fellowship program was funded, providing one year fellowships for two physicians each year. The program is administered by the UAB Dept of Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine.
