J. Kevin Smith, M.D., Ph.D. did his undergraduate training at the University of Michigan, followed by medical school and graduate school at Louisiana State University in Shreveport and The University of Kentucky. After completing his residency training in Diagnostic Radiology and Abdominal imaging at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, he joined the faculty in the abdominal imaging section.

Dr. Smith directs activities at the adjacent Birmingham VA Hospital where he is the chief of the diagnostic radiology service. He is a four-time recipient of the Gary Barnes Distinguished Faculty award for excellence in resident education. Residents appreciate his willingness to help out and teach above and beyond the call of duty. He was the creator and webmaster of the original UAB Radiology Web site, which included one of the first on-line teaching files in America. His research interests lie in minimally invasive cancer therapy, Dual energy CT, non-invasive vascular imaging, computers in medicine, and medical education.
   
   
   

 

 
 

 

The UAB Department of Radiology serves a pivotal and critical role in support of comprehensive patient care provided by the UAB Health System. 

Over 81 highly trained radiologists in every sub-specialty field form the foundation of diagnostic and therapeutic services are available to patients throughout the country. 

Research

The UAB Department of Radiology has active research in clinical, translational and basic science disciplines. Our research includes external funding portfolios and collaborative research with UAB and regional investigators.

Education

Our mission is to graduate well rounded, excellently trained radiologists capable of performing and interpreting a comprehensive range of radiologic procedures, who embrace the challenge of life-long learning in Radiology.

Patient Care

Our physicians and staff provide continuous support for our inpatient and outpatient facilities, including the state’s only ACS certified adult Level I trauma center.
