Outpatient Clinical Services


Our clinical services are mostly based in the outpatient setting, with our physicians providing care at both The Kirklin Clinic at UAB and UAB Highlands Rheumatology Clinic.  The breadth of knowledge and large number of rheumatologists in our Division allows us to provide state-of-the-art care for patients by physicians interested and specialized in particular diseases, as shown below:

      • Rheumatoid Arthritis:  Drs. Bridges, Danila, Curtis, Spalding, and Hughes
      • Lupus:  Drs. Chatham, Kimberly, Fessler and Trojanowski
      • Psoriatic Arthritis:  Dr. Townsend
      • Scleroderma:  Drs. Fessler and Trojanowski
      • Polymyositis/Dermatomyositis: Dr. Fessler
      • Gout:  Drs. Saag and Singh
      • Osteoporosis:  Drs. Morgan, Saag and Curtis
      • Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Program: Dr. Hughes
      • Vasculitis: Drs. Bridges, Fessler and Gaffo
      • Fibromyalgia Workshop for Patients


Our rheumatologists work closely with specialists in musculoskeletal radiology to provide cutting-edge imaging techniques and interpretation of radiographs, CT scans, and MRI scans.  The Interdisciplinary Infusion Center at The Kirklin Clinic provides ready access to the latest FDA-approved intravenous medications for rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, lupus, and osteoporosis. Hospital-based Rheumatology


In addition to outpatient rheumatology services, the UAB Division of Clinical Immunology provides high quality care for hospitalized patients with known or suspected rheumatologic conditions.  The rheumatology consultation service includes an attending physician, rheumatology fellows, medical residents, and medical students, and provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment recommendations for patients at UAB Hospital, UAB Highlands, the Birmingham VA Medical Center, Cooper Green Mercy Hospital, and other UAB-affiliated hospitals.
