The University of Alabama Hospital receives referrals from the entire state of Alabama as well as surrounding regions (Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Georgia). Services that are uniquely available within Alabama include pediatric cardiac surgery, thoracic transplantation (heart, lung, and heart-lung), and mechanical circulatory support (bridge to transplantation and destination therapy). The hospitals participating in the UAB Thoracic Surgery Training Program include University Hospital and the Birmingham VA Medical Center.
University Hospital has 908 total beds with 48 beds dedicated to cardiothoracic surgical patients. There are seven operating rooms dedicated to Cardiothoracic Surgery. There are three additional shared operating rooms for endovascular procedures, operations performed with robotic assistance, and an endoscopy suite. University Hospital has 20 dedicated cardiothoracic intensive care unit beds as well as space in the surgical intensive care unit for thoracic surgical patients.
The M9 Thoracic Surgery Unit consists of 19 private rooms, staffed by ACLS certified RNs with specialized training in the care of the thoracic surgery patient. Utilizing a fast-track protocol developed specifically for this patient population by Dr. Robert Cerfolio, Dr. Douglas Minnich and their staff, the patient is assisted in a return to optimal functioning with an avoidance of complications. The goal of the recovery plan is to help the patient gain independence in their personal care and daily activities before their return home. As a patient-family focused treatment center, a multidisciplinary team approach is utilized to care for the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the thoracic surgery patient and their family during the surgical recovery stage.
The Birmingham VA Medical Center has 134 hospital beds with five cardiothoracic surgical beds in addition to four cardiothoracic ICU beds. The Birmingham VAMC has two operating rooms dedicated to cardiac surgery and shares additional OR space for endoscopy and non-cardiac thoracic surgical procedures.
