Dr. James Kirklin is the Division Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery.  His special interests include congenital heart surgery and surgery for advanced heart failure including cardiac transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.

Dr. Constantine Athanasuleas performs a wide range of adult cardiac surgical procedures.  Many of these are complex cases referred from the Southeast region. He has special interests in ventricular restoration (e.g. Dor procedure) and the use of transmyocardial revascularization as a standalone or adjunct procedure.

Dr. Robert Dabal restricts his practice to the Pediatric age group. He has special interest and expertise in the management of transposition of the great vessels using arterial switch procedures.

Dr. James Davies performs a wide range of adult cardiac surgical procedures.  Of note, Dr. Davies devoted an additional three months to further training in the surgical management of thoracic aortic disease following completion of residency at the Mayo Clinic. His areas of expertise include complex aortic surgery, endovascular procedures and the treatment of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms. 

 Dr. William Holman

William L. Holman, MD

Dr. William Holman performs adult cardiac and thoracic operations and is Chief of Surgical Services at the Birmingham VA Medical Center. He has a special interest in mechanical circulatory support as a member of the advanced heart failure team at UAB.
