The Division of Transplantation Surgery, Department of Surgery, University of Alabama, Birmingham, School of Medicine, has been a leader in organ transplantation since 1968 when the first kidney transplant was performed at UAB. The program has grown steadily and now includes:
The resources for the Division of Transplantation include two inpatient transplant units with facilities for outpatient visits and outpatient surgery at The Kirklin Clinic at UAB and a block of rooms at a hospital-owned apartment complex for extended outpatient stays. Associated resources include the Alabama Regional Histocompatibility Laboratory, the Alabama Organ Center, and the organ procurement agency for the state of Alabama. The division has recently opened an outreach clinic in Mobile for remote follow-up of renal, pancreas, liver, heart, and lung transplant recipients. |
