Fellowships

Pediatric Fellowship

A one year fellowship is offered at the Children's Hospital of Alabama that is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council of Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowships and fulfills the requirements to sit for the American Board of Pediatric Neurosurgery Board examination. Approximately one thousand pediatric neurosurgical cases are done each year within the program that span the broad spectrum of Pediatric Neurosurgery. Multi-disciplinary clinics and programs are offered in Spina Bifida, Spasticity, Ante-natal clinic, Craniofacial Clinic and the Comprehensive Pediatric Epilepsy Program. Five ABPNS certified or eligible neurosurgeons form the faculty.

UAB/Children's Hospital of Alabama has a proud tradition of training leaders in Pediatric Neurosurgery. Twelve fellows have been trained and have joined the ranks of distinguished Pediatric Neurosurgery programs in both private and academic communities including St. Louis Children's Hospital, Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, University of Wisconsin Children's Hospital, Calgary Children's Hospital and Eggleston/Scottish Rite Hospital for Children of Emory University.

Stereotactic & Functional Fellowship

A one-year, Society of Neurological Surgeons, CAST accredited Stereotactic and Functional Fellowship is offered at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. It closely adheres to the Society of Neurological Surgeons' Curriculum for Subspecialty/Fellowship Training in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery. The University of Alabama-Birmingham hosts a renowned multidisciplinary Center for Movement Disorders, which is one of nine nationally designated advanced research centers, according to the American Parkinson's Disease Association. The group consists of both neurosurgeons and neurologists whose senior faculty members have more than 150 publications in the area of Movement Disorders.

The fellowship activities will be primarily located at UAB, under the direction of Dr. Barton Guthrie. Clinical components include: comprehensive participation in the adult DBS service; participation in the development of the pediatric DBS program at Children's Hospital of Alabama and the Birmingham Veterans Administration Medical Center; comprehensive participation on the radiosurgery service (Gamma Knife and Linac modalities), and a Neurosurgery Instructorship, with staff privileges to take emergency call, maintain a clinical service, and run a weekly general neurosurgery clinic.
