Dr. John Wellons was interviewed September 2009 by WJOX 94.5 about concussive head injury in children and teens. There has been an upturn of recent interest in this problem due to a significant rise in sport related traumatic head injury. Dr. Wellons has served as the Director of Think First, Alabama, an education and advocacy program designed and developed by organized Neurosurgery to prevent head and spine injuries.
Dr. Winfield S. Fisher III was named to the Griffin Harsh endowed chair in Neurosurgery in November, 2009. link to article
Dr. James Markert was named the James Garber Galbraith Endowed Chair of Neurosurgery at UAB in June, 2009. Dr. Markert is recognized as a national authority in the field of novel therapies who has made major contributions to the field of neuro-oncology with his work with malignant glioma. link to article
