The Division has active research in most aspects of otolaryngology, with clinical trials for many difficult to treat diseases and a strong basic science research focus in Head and Neck Oncology (mouth and throat cancer) and Rhinology (sinus disease).  Investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored clinical trials are available for interested patients and have been approved through the UAB Institutional Review Board.

Many physicians within the Division have specific areas of research and collaborate with other investigators at UAB and around the country.  Dr. Carroll conducts research on the attitudes toward head and neck cancer in underserved areas of rural Alabama.  Dr. Woodworth maintains a fully-funded basic science laboratory in mucosal disorders and is actively exploring novel treatment paradigms.  Dr. Rosenthal has a lab that investigates the role of targeted therapy in head and neck cancer as well as novel imaging strategies to view cancer in the operating room.  Dr. Rosenthal's laboratory website

Basic, translational and clinical research opportunities are also available to residents within the Division of Otolaryngology.  Residents are expected in their PGY3, 4 and 5 year to produce a paper for submission to a national meeting and present at the Annual Resident Research Day, held in May each year.  Basic research in sinonasal disease and head and neck cancer is available during the four-month research rotation.   Residents often present their work at national meetings and have the opportunity to work with any of the faculty they choose.
