Aria Ready? A Gala Evening of Opera Arias Print E-mail
vocalnats2013Join us for an evening of opera arias! The performers include many state and regional winners of vocal competitions, including Alabama NATS, Southeastern regional NATS, and Birmingham Music Clubs. All of the singers have been featured in leading an chorus roles in UAB Opera productions, including last fall's production of The Merry Widow. The evening will feature arias from operas ranging from Handel to Barber. It promises to be a gala event! So, join us TONIGHT. UAB's Hulsey Recital Hall. 7:30 PM.
 
Indian Slide Guitarist Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Tabla Player Pandit Subhen Chatterjee to Present Master Class Print E-mail

indianartistsGrammy Award-winning Indian slide guitarist Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and tabla player Pandit Subhen Chatterjee will present a free master class on Indian music to students and faculty in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Music.

The master class is set for 1:30-3 p.m. Monday, April 15, 2013, in UAB’s Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South. The master class is open to the public.

Bhatt has attracted international attention by his successful “Indianisation” of the western Hawaiian guitar with his perfect assimilation of sitar, sarod and veena techniques, by giving it an evolutionary design and shape and by adding 14 more strings, according to his website profile. With blinding speed and faultless legato, Bhatt is an expressive, versatile slide player whose powerhouse performances electrify audiences around the world.

UAB's Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk - Soprano, and Yakov Kasman - Piano, Present Recital Print E-mail

Soprano Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk presents a vocal recital with pianist Yakov Kasman on April 2 at 7pm in the Reynolds-Kirschbaum Recital Hall at the Alys Stephens Center. The theme, "North and South," ties the recital together. The program includes Handel's "Nel dolce dell'oblio, Poulenc's " Banalités," Barber's "Knoxville: Summer of 1915," Kander's "Letter from Sullivan Ballou," and Turine's "Poema en forme de canciones." Flutist Lisa Wienhold and Maria Lyapkova will join Hurst-Wajszczuk for the Handel contata, featuring UAB's newly-refurbished harpsichord. Admission is free.


 
UAB Music’s Denise Gainey set for recital at 11th Clarinet Symposium Print E-mail

denise_gainey_storyDenise Gainey, D.M.A., associate professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Music, will give a free recital at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 2, 2013, as part of the 11th annual UAB Clarinet Symposium.

Gainey’s recital, “Cocobolo Dreams,” will take place at UAB’s Alys Stephens Center, 1200 10th Ave. South. She will perform along with Kevin Chance, piano; Diane Barger, clarinet; and UAB Music’s Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk, soprano. The program will include Suite from “The Victorian Kitchen Garden” by Paul Reade, Sonatine by Pierre Gabaye, Sechs deutsche Lieder, Op. 103 by Louis Spohr and Sonata for Two Clarinets and Piano by Gary Schocker.

Each year UAB Music presents the Clarinet Symposium, which is open to clarinetists of all ages and skill levels. Guest artists this year are Barger, professor of clarinet at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; John Masserini, professor of clarinet at Northern Arizona University; Michael Rowlette, D.M.A., assistant professor of clarinet and music literature at of the University of Mississippi; London Silas-Shavers, clarinet and saxophone teacher at Northwest Mississippi Community College; and The Atlanta Clarinets.

Early Music at UAB - Sunday, February 10 at 3pm Print E-mail
BaroqueFor the first time in decades, audiences will be able to hear the harpsichord built especially for the Department of Music over 30 years ago, played by Maria Lyapkova. Rebuilt by Ferdinand Pointer, this Italian harpsichord is one of the few instruments of its kind in the Birmingham area, and this concert will launch the Collegium Musicum concert series at UAB. The program includes arias by Vivaldi and Caccini; lute songs by Dowland Lanier, Blow, and Campion; and arias and duets by Monteverdi. Thanks to a Faculty Development grant to refurbish the harpsichord and host early music specialists, soprano Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk will be joined by soprano Elizabeth Packard Arnold, mezzo-soprano Katherine Sherwood White, lutenist Dieter Hennings, cellist JoAnn Strickland.

UAB Presents Blind Boys of Alabama and Alabama Symphony Orchestra with Conductor Henry Panion Print E-mail

The Blind Boys of Alabama will perform with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra (ASO) and conductor Henry Panion III, Ph.D., in a special concert to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the seminal events of the Birmingham Civil Rights Movement.

The event is presented by the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Music in conjunction with the biennial conference in Birmingham of the National Association for the Study and Performance of African-American Music (NASPAAM). The performance will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 16, 2013, in the Jemison Concert Hall of UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, 1200 10th Ave. South. Tickets are $55, $35 and $22 and will go on sale Friday, Feb. 1. Call 205-975-2787.
