 Won Cho, D.M.A., brings a warm, sonorous bass and a world of performing experience to the UAB Department of Music, which he recently joined as an assistant professor of voice. Here, the Korean-Canadian vocalist offers a peek into his globetrotting career.
You’ve performed in operas and concerts around the world. Do you enjoy traveling?
I love going to different countries, and I’ve found that language and music are the best way to understand their cultures. I’m now traveling more outside of the major countries where most opera singers perform, like Italy and Germany. This summer will take me to Korea, China, and Spain for performances and teaching, and I recently went to China for a Christmas/New Year opera gala concert. My new initiative is to learn and perform each country’s folk music, either as part of the concert repertoire or as an encore to show the audience my appreciation.

An electro-acoustic work by a UAB Music professor will be featured in a digital landscape installation in Portugal. The work is “2 Days in the Tank,” by Assistant Professor of Music William Price, D.M.A. It will be part of a sound installation titled “Sound Walk / Sound Garden,” which will be held at the Goethe-Institut Garden in Lisbon as part of the 2012 Música Viva Festival. Price’s work was selected from an open call for electroacoustic works to composers around the world.

 The Maestro’s Ball, the gala fundraiser that opens Alabama Symphony seasons, is mostly about style.
Patrons decked out in formal wear, a gourmet dinner, and a flow of monetary contributions annually help to sustain an orchestra that is thriving musically on a relatively meager budget. This year’s affair, hosted by Kelly and Lee Styslinger, brought in $686,985. |

Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk, Director of UAB Opera, has been appointed the Governor for the Alabama chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). Her duties will include coordinating the Artist Award competition for the chapter, serving as co-chair of the state membership of NATS, and serving on the board of Southeastern Regional NATS.

Yakov Kasman has been named recipient of the 2012 Ireland Award for Scholarly Distinction. “Yakov emulates everything this prize was created to celebrate,” says Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences, Thomas M. DiLorenzo. “The level of prestige and honor he brings to the Department of Music, the College, and UAB is priceless.”
UAB presents the award annually to a full-time faculty member in the College of Arts and Sciences for professional and academic achievements and contributions to the university and local community. The prize, made possible by the Caroline P. and Charles W. Ireland Endowment for Scholarly Distinction, comes with $5,000 cash and a Steuben crystal engraved award.
