The UAB Trumpet Ensemble performed the past Spring at the prestigious International Trumpet Guild Conference, which was held May 23-26, 2012 at Columbus State University. The ensemble is directed by UAB Department of Music faculty James Zingara, D.M.A., and Steve Roberts, D.M.A.

 Congratulation are in order as The UAB Jazz Ensemble takes the first place award ( Band of Distinction) at the 2012 Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame Student Jazz Band Festival. The annual competition is held in Birmingham, AL at the historic Carver District, which serves as home of the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame. The UAB jazz program is headed by Dr. Steve Roberts. UAB music technology major Micah Braxton won the Outstanding Soloist award for his performance on drums with the UAB Jazz Combo and the UAB Jazz Ensemble. Held annually, the competition included college jazz programs from throughout the state of Alabama and Mississippi. |

Five UAB singers, all students of Dr. Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk, recently took several prizes at the Alabama NATS competition in Huntsville: Charles Daniel: 2nd place, senior men (right); Shane Bloemetjie: 2nd place, junior men (center); Jake Hemminger: 2nd place, sophomore men (left); Jake Hemminger: 2nd place, sophomore musical theatre men; Valencia Callens: semi-finalist, sophomore women; Mary Katherine Whatley: semi-finalist, sophomore women.

Congratulations are in order to music technology major Kevin Peek for winning 1st Place in Region IV of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) in the category of sound design. Kevin, along with fellow UAB theater major Natalie Kinsaul, composed original music and sound effects for Bertolt Brecht’s “The Caucasian Chalk Circle,” presented by Theatre UAB in October 2011. Both will go to the national KCACTF festival in Washington, D.C., in April. As a music tech major, Kevin is a member of the department’s Computer Music Ensemble and is a recipient of the Stevie Wonder Music Technology Scholarship, offered through the department. |

When UAB senior music major Ralph Marion went to bed on Sunday, January 22, 2012 he never imagined having to go through a devastating tornado that literally would rip his family's home from around them. Ralph, a former UAB drum major, parents Ronald and Bethanne, and brother Ryan were able to walk out of the basement of their three-level home miraculously without a scratch. Their home, however, including the cars, furniture, and clothing, didn’t fare as well.
