"Friend, Foes, and Allies," featuring Marc Reed, trumpet; Dale Reynolds, piano; Jeffrey Flaniken, violin; Laura Noah, percussion; and Denise Gainey, clarinet. UAB Department of Music presents the ninth annual UAB Clarinet Retreat, UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South. The retreat is open to students and clarinetists of all ages and abilities for discussion of topics concerning clarinetists and performance in a large clarinet choir. UAB Opera Burning Fiery Furnace
UAB Opera's production of "The Burning Fiery Furnace" is part of a double bill with "Dido and Aeneas" on March 11 and 12.

UAB Opera, 7:30 p.m., UAB's Alys Stephens Center, 1200 10th Ave. South. Directed by Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk with Les Fillmer conducting. UAB Opera presents a double bill of Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas" and Britten's "The Burning Fiery Furnace." Purcell and Britten are often paired as the two most important British composers, even though their work was more than three centuries apart. "Dido and Aeneas" tells the story of the Queen of Carthage, and will be staged with traditional Baroque gestures and dances. "The Burning Fiery Furnace" has a nearly all-male cast and recounts the story from the Hebrew Scriptures of Nebuchadnezzar and the three Israelites. Call 205-975-2787 for ticket information. Since its inception in 1972, The United States Army Brass Quintet has performed for a wide variety of audiences and dignitaries in 39 states and 12 foreign countries. An element of The U.S. Army Band "Pershing's Own" in Washington, D.C., The U.S. Army Brass Quintet performs at the White House and at such televised national events as presidential inaugurations and official state ceremonies in the nation's capitol.
