New season of performances announced by UAB Department of Music

Enjoy free performances by students, faculty and guest artists presented by the UAB Department of Music.

A new season of musical performances has just been announced at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The performances are presented by the College of Arts and SciencesDepartment of Music and feature students, faculty and guest artists.

Most performances take place in UAB’s Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall and Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center. Nearly all the performances are free, and those that are ticketed help support the department.

Student ensembles in the department feature more than 100 music majors and approximately 150 more students from many other majors, representing all undergraduate colleges and schools at UAB, says Chair Patrick Evans, D.M. Ensembles include the Concert Choir, Jazz Combo, Marching Blazers, Gospel Choir, Percussion Ensemble, Computer Music Ensemble, Wind Symphony, Brass Chamber ensembles, Faculty Brass Quintet and more.

Saturday, Sept. 15

UAB All-Star Band Day, Legion Field. An estimated 200 outstanding high school band students will perform with the UAB Marching Blazers at the UAB Football game. The event is open to all high school marching band members, including woodwinds, brass, percussion, color guard, majorettes, and dancers or drill team members.

UAB Music faculty recital “A Trumpet Recital in Three Acts,” featuring James Zingara, trumpet and Chris Steele, piano, 7 p.m., UAB’s Mary Culp Hulsey Recital, 950 13th St. South. Act One will feature traditional solo trumpet works by Arthur Honegger, Robert Starer and Pietro Baldassare. Act Two will highlight new works for trumpet including an unaccompanied piece by Paul Osterfield, and the world premiere of “Blue Butterfly” for flugelhorn and mixed media by UAB music instructor Craig Brandwein. The final act will feature performances by the UAB Chamber Trio (the world premiere of Andrew Wilson’s “Jennycliff Bay”) and by the UAB Brass Quintet (Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story Suite”). Free.

UAB Fall Choral Collage, 7 p.m., Southside Baptist Church. The UAB Fall Choral Collage will feature UAB's Concert Choir, Chamber Singers and Gospel Choir performing a variety of repertoire, largely from the contemporary choral tradition. Highlights include two world-premiere performances: a setting of the “Ave Maria” text by Richard Burchard and an arrangement of the traditional African-American spiritual “Bound For Canaan Lan’” by Stacey V. Gibbs. Other works by notable composers such as Casals, Gjeilo, Ešenvalds, Arnesen and more will also be included. The concert is free and open to the public.

UAB Piano Series concert featuring Sofya Gulyak, 4 p.m., UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, Reynolds-Kirschbaum Recital Hall, 1200 10th Ave. South. Russian pianist Gulyak was awarded the first prize and the Princess Mary Gold Medal in 2009 at the 16th Leeds International Piano Competition, the first woman in the history of the competition to achieve this distinction. Gulyak has performed with dozens of orchestras around the world. She is professor of piano at the London Royal College of Music. UAB Voice Professor Cho will present a lecture/recital on Korean art songs by leading Korean women composers with guest artist Kyoung Cho of University of South Florida. This event, with audio/video samples and live performance, will celebrate the release of Cho’s new recording and introduce the music of Korean women composers in historical, social and cultural context. Concert: Birmingham Art Music Alliance, 7 p.m., UAB’s Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South. The UAB Department of Music, in conjunction with the Birmingham Art Music Alliance, will present The Blair Collective, an ensemble of music faculty from the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University, including saxophonist Brian Utley, bassoonist Peter Kolkay, percussionist Ji Hye Jung and pianist Melissa Rose. Christmas at the Alys, an annual choral celebration that began in 2001, has welcomed thousands of young choral singers from schools throughout the Birmingham community to perform together with UAB choirs. Featuring traditional holiday favorites and standard choral classics. The concert is led by the UAB Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, with Brian Kittredge, DMA, conductor, and the UAB Trumpet Ensemble, led by James Zingara, DMA, conductor.
