UAB researchers are looking at the relationship between bone and fat. While there has been a dramatic increase in childhood obesity over the past three decades, there also has been an increase in fracture risk.
The UAB study will attempt to identify factors related to bone and fat mass accrual prior to puberty in white girls, in an effort to develop interventions that might help curtail obesity and promote bone health. The study is funded by the UAB Center for Metabolic Bone Disease. Researchers are enrolling white girls, age 5 to 10 years old.
