Sophomores Kevin Lee of Huntsville, Alabama, and Daniel Mendoza of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, will spend the summer studying at the American University in Dubai after being awarded the William Jefferson Clinton Scholarship.

10 U.S. students are selected for the program each semester. The program is designed to expose students to culture in the Middle East and places an emphasis on those who are interested in being exposed to the Arab world for the first time. Recipients of the Clinton Scholarship receive full tuition and housing for one term.

Lee, a philosophy major in the UAB College of Arts and Sciences and student in the Early Medical School Acceptance Program, plans to pursue a career in emergency medicine.

“The Clinton Scholarship will help expand my perspective of a culture I have not yet experienced and help to expand my awareness of different patient needs,” Lee said.

Mendoza, a biology major with minors in STEM education and Spanish, is a student in the UAB Teach program. He plans to pursue a career in education, first as a high school teacher, then as a professor.

“This scholarship will help me reach my goals by diversifying my background and interests,” Mendoza said. “It will give me an opportunity to experience Middle Eastern culture.”

Lee and Mendoza are also students in the UAB Honors College’s University Honors program.
