The winning team will compete in the statewide competition Feb. 24. Students from nine universities across Alabama will try to solve a global health issue during the 2018 Statewide Global Health Case Competition. The Sparkman Center for Global Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham will host the 10th annual event Saturday, Feb. 24.
Undergraduate students from UAB, University of Alabama, Alabama State University, Alabama A&M University, Auburn University, Birmingham Southern College, Jacksonville State University, Miles College, and Samford University will participate. The students will work in teams to develop and propose an innovative solution to a current global public health issue. The teams will receive the case Feb. 19 and have five days to create a proposal.
On Saturday, Feb. 24, teams will have 15 minutes to present their proposal to a panel of judges, followed by a five-minute question-and-answer session. The top three teams will be awarded cash prizes. First place will receive $1,500, second place will receive $1,000, and third place will receive $500.
The judges will consist of a team of experts in public broadcasting, academia and public service.
“It’s a practical problem challenge that supplements and expands their global education and exposure,” said Craig Wilson, M.D., director of the UAB Sparkman Center for Global Health. “We are happy to sponsor this once more from the Sparkman Center.”
UAB hosted the UAB Students Global Health Case Competition on Feb. 3. More than 60 students from eight different UAB schools participated. The case was called Road Traffic Injuries in Granada, Nicaragua: Prevention, Safety and Emergency Response.
