Annual UAB symposium focuses on health from a global perspective

The Health Disparities Research Symposium highlights the work of undergraduate, graduate, faculty and community investigators.

symposium 3The University of Alabama at Birmingham Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Center will host the 13th annual UAB Health Disparities Research Symposium with a focus on social determinants of health from the global perspective March 19 at the DoubleTree by Hilton.

The symposium highlights work by academic investigators, students and community partners in basic science, clinical research, social and behavioral science, community-based, and health outcomes research the field of health disparities.

The 2018 symposium is produced by the UAB MHRC and is co-sponsored by two national centers for health disparities research: the Mid-South Transdisciplinary Collaborative Center, led by Mona Fouad, M.D., director and professor in the UAB Division of Preventive Medicine and director of the MHRC; and the Gulf States Health Policy Center, led by Regina Benjamin, M.D., founder and CEO of BayouClinic and 18th U.S. surgeon general.

“The symposium showcases the work being done to reduce health inequities in Alabama, the South and our nation,” Fouad said. “It provides an overview of the latest in health disparities research. Scientists and scholars look to it as an excellent opportunity to share discoveries, new approaches and successful models.”

The symposium will feature three keynote speakers who are world leaders in the field of health disparities research.

Judy Kurth is the director of the Centre for Health and Development at Staffordshire University. She is an experienced strategic manager with roles that have spanned local government and the National Health System over the past 25 years. Christopher Gidlow, Ph.D., is the academic director for the Centre for Health and Development and associate professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Staffordshire University. Aliko Ahmed, MBBS, is the director of Public Health England for East of England, a senior fellow both at Chatham House Centre on Global Health Security and the Institute of Public Health at the University of Cambridge. He is also a professor in public health at Staffordshire University. 

Highlights of the annual event include the oral presentations and poster sessions featuring original research by academic investigators, scholars and community partners in the fields of basic science, clinical research, social and behavioral science and community-based research.
