expo 2018The Expo will provide a platform for students to practice presentation skills, engage with like-minded peers and exchange research experiences.Academic endeavors of undergraduate students featuring research, creative activity and scholarship will be showcased at the 11th annual University of Alabama at Birmingham Undergraduate Research Expo and Video Research Awards presented by the UAB Office of Service Learning and Undergraduate Research.

“The UAB Expo provides a platform for experiential learning for our students,” said Pam Benoit, Ph.D., provost at UAB. “Students are able to gain experience in presenting that can be added to their resumes when applying for fellowships and research placements.”

On April 12 and 13, the UAB Expo will provide a platform for students to practice and strengthen presentation skills, share work, engage with like-minded peers, and exchange research experiences and ideas, as well as receive feedback from peers and faculty. On April 12, oral presentations will take place at the Hill Student Center from 1 to 4 p.m. On April 13, poster presentations will take place at Bartow Arena from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Tino Unlap, Ph.D., an associate professor in the UAB School of Health Professions and keynote speaker, believes the students’ learning is elevated to the highest level through research. He will present “Changing the World through Undergraduate Research.”

Categories for oral and poster presentations include art and humanities; biological and life sciences; business, finance and international studies; education; engineering; health sciences and health professions; physical and applied sciences; service learning; and social and behavioral sciences.

The first UAB Video Research Awards, a video and presentation competition for undergraduate research students, will take place alongside the Expo. Students create two-minute videos summarizing their research, which is judged by a panel and UAB students. The panel and students will choose six videos that will be presented in a six-minute research presentation to an audience and panel.

“Students should be able to communicate their work clearly and effectively,” Benoit said. “The UAB Video Research Awards provides students the opportunity to present their ideas and tell their stories to people in their respective fields and elsewhere.”

Final presentations and winners of the UAB Video Research Awards will be announced during the UAB Expo on April 12.
