UAB to celebrate 50th anniversary of first transplant in Alabama

Since 1968, UAB surgeons have performed more than 14,000 transplants.

50 transplant streamIn 1968, surgeons at the University of Alabama at Birmingham performed the first transplant in the state. Since then, UAB Medicine has successfully completed more than 14,000 organ transplants. On May 8, UAB will commemorate that historic day with a celebration of 50 years of transplantation.

The event will take place on the first floor of the north pavilion atrium at 11 a.m. and is free and open to the public. Information about becoming a living donor, providing financial gifts to support transplantation at UAB and more will be available at the event.

During the past half-century, the UAB Comprehensive Transplant Institute has pioneered many changes, including groundbreaking research, new medicines and innovative techniques. People from across the country — 44 states — have come to UAB for organ transplantation, making UAB a major national player in the field.
