The University of Alabama at Birmingham has partnered with Alabama Power Company to install 18 new electric vehicle charging stations on campus for UAB faculty and staff.

“UAB is committed to encouraging its employees to be their most sustainable selves,” said Julie Price, manager of UAB Sustainability. “EV charging stations are a new technology that can help educate the campus.”

Charging stations will be available for employee use beginning June 29. Additional locations will include the parking lot of the new Collat School of Business building, which is set to open later this summer.

The 18 charging stations are in addition to eight electric vehicle charging stations unveiled on campus last spring, which are open to the public. UAB’s public-access charging stations are located in Express Lot No. 4, 410 10th St. South, Lot 5A, 1500 University Boulevard and Lot 77, 921 19th St. South. UAB Sustainability and UAB Parking and Transportation will monitor the frequency, duration and peak use times for the stations to manage the need for more on campus.

Electric vehicle drivers looking to recharge at UAB’s public-access stations will need to download the free ChargePoint mobile app. The stations are capable of fully charging an electric vehicle in four hours.
