ArtPlay Dance Camp

Level I: Beginner (Two-week camp)

When: June 10-21, 2013, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday-Friday

Ages: 5-10 (with none or up to two years of dance experience)

Description: Students will use their imaginations to bring stories and characters to life through movement to music and rhythms. Activities in this class will promote body and sensory awareness, physical fitness and self-esteem. Over the course of camp students will receive training in ballet, modern, jazz, tap and hip hop in addition to lunchtime workshops. The camp will culminate in a student/faculty performance. Camp faculty will include ArtPlay Teaching Artist William-Michael Cooper and Guest Artist Leah Tubbs of New York City’s ModArts Dance Collective.

ArtPlay Dance Intensive

Level II: Intermediate (Three-week camp)

When: June 3-21, 2013, noon-5 p.m. Monday-Friday

Ages: 10-13 (or with two to three years of dance experience)

Description: At this level students will receive daily, intermediate-level instruction in ballet and modern with additional classes in jazz, hip hop and tap. Throughout the intensive students will rehearse for the culminating student/faculty performance. Dance faculty will include ArtPlay Teaching Artist William-Michael Cooper and Guest Artist Leah Tubbs of New York City’s ModArts Dance Collective. All Level II students will also receive a free clinic in nutrition geared toward the young dancer by UAB’s Beth Kitchen.

ArtPlay Dance Intensive

Level III: Advanced (Three-week camp)

When: June 3-21, 2013, noon-5 p.m. Monday-Friday

Ages: 13 + (with three or more years of dance training)

Description: Students at this level must demonstrate the ability to take more advanced levels of dance and will receive instruction in ballet, pre-pointe or pointe, and modern with additional classes in jazz, hip hop and tap. Lunchtime workshops will be offered in composition, improvisation, resume writing and health for young dancers including a session on nutrition and wellness taught by UAB Assistant Professor of Nutrition Sciences, Beth Kitchin, Ph.D., R.D. Head shots will be offered for an additional fee.  These students will have the opportunity to dance in a newly choreographed piece with the ArtPlay Studio Ensemble and new work by Leah Tubbs during the finale performance.  Dance faculty will include ArtPlay Teaching Artist William-Michael Cooper and Guest Artist Leah Tubbs of New York City’s ModArts Dance Collective.
