Illusionist Kevin Spencer performs Nov. 17 at UAB’s Alys Stephens Center

The Alys Stephens Center will also present a free sensory-friendly show Nov. 18. During Kevin Spencer’s residency, he will meet with patients at Children’s of Alabama and patients and students at UAB.

kevin spencer asc releaseIllusionist Kevin Spencer will perform an evening of magic for the whole family Friday, Nov. 17, followed by a sensory-friendly afternoon performance Saturday, Nov. 18, presented by the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center.

Spencer is a world-renowned illusionist and artist widely considered the leading authority on the therapeutic use of magic tricks in special education and rehabilitation. He believes in creating inclusive communities where everyone experiences an authentic sense of belonging and no one — for any reason — is relegated to the margins. He is an educator, teaching artist, researcher, consultant, speaker, curriculum designer and award-winning film producer.

His Healing of Magic residency at UAB, presented by UAB’s Institute for Arts in Medicine, will include Exceptional Foundation workshops for adults with cognitive disabilities; performances and workshops with patients, caregivers and staff at Children’s of Alabama; workshops with occupational therapy students in the UAB School of Health Professions; and work with patients at the UAB Spain Rehabilitation Center gym.

Arts in Medicine will also present a free sensory-friendly performance at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, for adults and children with sensory sensitivities, including individuals on the autism spectrum.
