Murphy heads UAB's Barefield Entrepreneurship Program and has been an entrepreneurship professor for over two decades. He is a leading expert in entrepreneurship training, entrepreneurship education, social enterprise, university outreach to entrepreneurial ventures and entrepreneurial ecosystems. He is a frequent contributor to many national and international media outlets and he has published extensively in leading academic journals. He is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Small Business and Enterprise Development. He authored a major scholarly book about mutiny in entrepreneurial firms using data from historic seafaring ventures during the Age of Discovery, which was published in 2013 by Yale University Press.   

Murphy is a multi-award-winning teacher and researcher. He was named a 2023 Techstar All-Star Mentor. In 2022, he won the UAB Collat School of Business teaching award. In 2017, Future Founders selected him as its inaugural “Entrepreneurship Professor of the Year." In 2016, AmericanInno named him to Chicago’s “50 on Fire” for his impact on the Chicago entrepreneurial ecosystem. He has worked with many entrepreneurs and firms in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, New Zealand and Europe.
