UAB Physics professor named Fellow by Optical Society

UAB physics researcher recognized for his work in optical technology.

The Optical Society has elevated University Professor Sergey B. Mirov, in the UAB Department of Physics, to the rank of Fellow Member. Mirov is one of only 66 selected out of the more than 130,000 professionals from 175 countries that make up the OSA. Mirov is being recognized for outstanding contributions to the development of novel vibronic lasers based on color center crystals and II-VI wide band semiconductors doped with transition metal ions.

sergey_mirov_story“Sergey has served the optics community with distinction, and I am very pleased to recognize him with this honor,” said OSA President Tony Heinz. “He is part of a truly global group of individuals, this year’s fellows representing more than a dozen countries on four continents.”

OSA Fellows are selected based on nominations from current Fellow members. Since 1916 OSA has worked to advance the common interests of the field, providing educational resources to the scientists, engineers and business leaders who work in the field by promoting the science of light and the advanced technologies made possible by optics and photonics.
