UAB graphic design students, faculty win big with Addy awards

UAB students win big, including best in show, for their classroom graphic design work at Birmingham advertising awards.

UAB students and a faculty member from the Department of Art and Art History were among the winners of 2012 Birmingham Addy awards Feb. 2. The Addys are the American Advertising Federation’s Birmingham chapter awards and recognize excellence in advertising and graphic design.

addys2The students were honored for graphic design work they did in the classroom. Jin Lee Chung of Troy, Ohio, was honored with the Best of Show award in the student category. Honored with Gold awards in the student category were Chung for “Alabama Eats” snack chips packaging; Alyssa Mitchell of Huntsville for Split Milk packaging; Brandi Wilson-Sides of Jasper for Monarch Butterfly Reserve promotional material; and Mat Powell of Birmingham for Ruffner Mountain Run poster.

Honored with Silver awards in the student category were Emily Kerley of Trussville for Southern Charms cookie packaging; Brittany Fox of Birmingham for OLIO Olive Oil design; Daniel Twieg of Birmingham for a poster for The Consigliere agency; Powell for the booklet “Surviving a Science Fiction Film”; and Mitchell for a self-promotion, “Generating Bright Ideas.” Two groups won Silver awards for brochures they actually created for Cahaba River Society: one by Chung, Kerley and Jennifer Waycaster of Calera and another by Samantha Gibbons of Hoover, Amy Clark of Birmingham and Chasity Simms of Anniston.

Assistant Professor Doug Barrett, M.F.A., was awarded a Silver Addy for advertising industry self-promotion.
