Pittet to become editor-in-chief of Anesthesia & Analgesia

Jean-Francois Pittet, M.D., professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, will take on the role of editor-in-chief of the flagship journal of the International Anesthesia Research Society, Anesthesia & Analgesia, in March 2016.

The International Anesthesia Research Society is a nonpolitical, not-for-profit medical society founded in 1922 to advance and support scientific research and education related to anesthesia, and to improve patient care through basic research.

Pittet is a veteran educator and researcher in the fields of critical care, trauma and perioperative medicine. In the position of editor-in-chief of A&A, Pittet will set the tone and editorial direction of the 93-year-old journal, the oldest in the specialty of anesthesiology.

A 1977 graduate of the School of Medicine of the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, Pittet completed his postgraduate training in anesthesia and critical care medicine in Switzerland and worked as a clinician-scientist at the universities of Lausanne and Geneva.

In 1990, Pittet joined the Cardiovascular Research Institute at the University of California–San Francisco for a two-year fellowship and then, in 1992, the UCSF Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. In 2010, he was recruited to the Department of Anesthesiology at UAB, where he is the David H. Chestnut Professor of Anesthesiology and vice chair/director of the Division of Critical Care and Perioperative Medicine.
