Clay wins Charles Barkley-sponsored award

Olivio_Clay_2011_07Olivio J. Clay, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology, is the recipient of the 2011 Health Disparities Research Award, co-sponsored by the UAB Minority Health & Health Disparities Research Center and the UAB Center for Clinical and Translational Science.

Clay will be granted $60,000 for his research proposal “Racial Differences in Diabetes Distress: Factors Related to Health Disparities.” This project will lead to a better understanding of health disparities in psychological distress among older adults with diabetes. Measures associated with distress will help identify individuals who are at risk for negative outcomes. Subsequently, this knowledge will aid in the development of targeted intervention strategies to reduce distress and depression in older blacks and whites with diabetes.

Clay will receive the formal award Oct. 6, 2011, at An Evening of Special Tribute. The event is chaired by Charles Barkley and UAB School of Medicine Dean Ray Watts, M.D.
