UAB Wellness is conducting “Green Screens” every Friday this summer to help gauge cardiovascular health and provide direction when setting achievable health goals.

GreenScreens_webKnowing important numbers like blood pressure, weight and waist circumference can help gauge cardiovascular health and provide direction when setting achievable health goals. UAB Wellness is conducting “Green Screens” every Friday this summer, offering the opportunity to track these numbers for free.

All UAB faculty, staff and students, in addition to members of the community and hospital visitors are invited to stop by Green Screens, occurring 11 a.m.-1 p.m. each Friday through Aug. 2, 2013, in the first floor lobby of North Pavilion (NP), 615 18th Street South. The NP parking area will concurrently offer the Alabama Buy Fresh, Buy Local farmers market, with many fresh fruits and vegetables available.

Nurses from the UAB Advanced Nursing Coordinator Community Outreach Team will be available each week to perform the screenings and work with participants to set small, weekly goals, then encourage participants to check back in at Green Screens to see their progress. Additionally, a dietician will be on hand weekly to work with individuals on diet plans for themselves and their families.

“Hypertension is a silent killer in that many people with the disease don’t have side effects or symptoms present,” said Lauren Whitt, Ph.D., director of UAB Wellness. “Knowing and tracking your blood pressure numbers is crucial, especially if you have a family history of heart disease.”

The Summer 5 in 5 Challenge begins at the June 21 Green Screens with an initial weigh-in, which participants must attend to be eligible for prizes. This five-week program focuses on lowering blood pressure five points, losing five pounds and engaging in five designated activities. Those who meet at least one of the goals in the five weeks are eligible for prizes that will be raffled off at the conclusion of the challenge.
