Author to discuss Tuskegee and Guatemalan medical experiments

  • October 29, 2010

Susan Reverby, Ph.D., who recently revealed evidence of U.S. medical research that intentionally and involuntarily infected hundreds of people in Guatemala with gonorrhea and syphilis more than 60 years ago, will speak at UAB as part of the Reynolds Lecture Series at noon Nov. 16 in the Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences Ireland Room. Reverby is the Marion Butler McLean Professor at Wellesley College and author of "Examining Tuskegee: The Infamous Syphilis Study and its Legacy." She will speak on the effects of the Tuskegee experiments and the recently unearthed Guatemalan research.

Reverby's discovery of U.S. research malfeasance in Guatemala brought a formal apology to Guatemala's president from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius in early October. The lecture is free and open to the public.
