UAB medical students host free health screening on May 25

Equal Access Birmingham (EAB) will host a health screening at the Church of the Reconciler, 112 14th Street North, Birmingham, on Saturday, May 25, 2013.  This screening event is free and open to all community members as part of EAB’s goal to provide healthcare education and address the needs of the locally underserved.

The screening, from 1-3:30 p.m., will include measuring body mass index (BMI), blood pressure and blood glucose levels. Medical students will offer education on the meaning of test values, any conditions for which participants may be at risk and resources for improving health. Physical therapy students will be present to offer foot screenings for diabetics and posture assessments. All tests are provided free to the community to help individuals identify health risk factors that may require further medical attention.

EAB is a student-run initiative in the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine that seeks to provide healthcare access to those in need within the Birmingham community, promote health education and raise awareness of local health disparities through the efforts of medical students and various partnerships.

In addition to community health screenings such as this one, EAB runs a clinic every Sunday from 1-5:30 p.m., also at the Church of the Reconciler, providing continuity care at no charge. To make an appointment at the EAB Clinic, please call 205-259-8836.
