Yan Sanders, M.D., an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine at UAB, has received an American Thoracic Society Foundation Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis/Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation research grant to study the effect of changes in molecular proteins on the development of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
The grant provides $40,000 in funding per year for two years.
Pulmonary fibrosis is a disease in which tissue deep in a patient’s lungs becomes thick and stiff, or scarred, over time. In most cases, doctors cannot determine the cause of the disease, so the disease is known as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis or IPF. There is no cure for the disease, but pulmonary rehabilitation improves quality of life for many patients.
