The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s School of Dentistry is ranked first again in research funding from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. The School has been ranked first since 2012. UAB received more than $13 million in research funding from NIDCR in 2015.
NIDCR is the federal government’s lead agency for scientific research on dental, oral and craniofacial health and disease, and is the nation’s leading funder of these areas. NIDCR is one of the National Institutes of Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
“Four years ago, the School of Dentistry moved from a top 15 position among U.S. dental schools to No. 1,” said Michael S. Reddy, DMD, dean of the UAB School of Dentistry. “We have maintained that ranking by focusing on four research themes as part of our strategic plan. This allows us to partner with other investigators throughout the university to have critical mass within these areas. We hope to continue our strategic growth and are thankful for the support of the NIH.”
SOD research is divided into four themes, including craniofacial development/genetics, implementation science/clinical outcomes, biomaterial science/biometrics, and infection/host response.
