Area middle schoolers to learn about STEM at UAB

The event will be offered over two days in February, and will also include a parent/educator workshop this year.

kids in engineeringThe UAB chapter of the Society of Women Engineers will host its annual Kids in Engineering event during two days in February. Students in grades 4-6 can choose either Feb. 18 or Feb. 25.

As in years past, participants will take part in a variety of activities and competitions designed to provide insight into different types of science, technology, engineering and math concepts. New to the event this year will be a parent/educator workshop.

“We are inviting parents and educators to come for a one-and-half hour workshop where we’ll discuss ways they can encourage young students to get them excited about opportunities through STEM,” said SWE President Emma Latham, a junior majoring in biomedical engineering. “This will include a panel of engineers and educators. We hope this will give our event a bigger impact, since they’ll leave with ideas and tools they need to encourage STEM education throughout the year.”

Each event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18 and Saturday, Feb. 25 at UAB’s Business and Engineering Complex at 1150 10th Ave. S.

The cost is $30, and includes a t-shirt and lunch. To register, visit Kids in Engineering online.
