dalek_working_1_siteArtist James Marshall, more commonly known as Dalek and the creator of the iconic character Space Monkey, will install four enormous, site-specific wall paintings at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Visual Arts Gallery. Marshall will be in residence at the gallery May 23-June 1, 2011, and will create the paintings on site.

An exhibition of the works will open with a reception 5-8 p.m. June 1 and will show through Aug. 20.

The project will be accompanied by a special public art component to be launched separately, which will be announced soon, says Brett Levine, director of the UAB Visual Arts Gallery.

“Dalek’s public art component is made possible by and in partnership with Mayor William Bell and the City of Birmingham,” Levine says. “It’s going to be one of the coolest projects ever seen on the streets of Birmingham. Wait for the surprise!”
Summer hours will vary from the normal academic year and will be announced prior to the exhibition’s opening. Call 205-934-0815 for more details. The gallery, part of the UAB Department of Art and Art History, is located at 900 13th St. South on the UAB campus. Visit the gallery online at www.uab.edu/art/vagallery.php.
