UAB Music announces slate of summer music

UAB Music presents free summer concerts including a patriotic Fourth of July show, while the Gospel Choir concert offers a taste of the islands.

UAB Summer Music Camp Final Concert
, 11:30 a.m., UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, Sirote Theatre, 1200 10th Ave. South. This free concert features the 2013 summer music camp participants. Middle and high school students from Alabama and Georgia will perform as two bands. The concert will be conducted by Valerie Morgan, director of bands at Hoover’s Simmons Middle School, and Sue Samuels, Ph.D., director of bands at UAB. UAB Summer Band Independence Day concert
, 7:30 p.m., on the UAB Bartow Arena lawn, 617 13th St. South. Free. Bring blankets, chairs and picnics for this annual patriotic concert presented by the UAB Department of Music. Enjoy show tunes, Broadway classics, patriotic favorites and standards, then watch the fireworks shot from atop Red Mountain. The UAB Summer Band includes adult amateur musicians from various professions as well as current UAB student musicians, faculty and area professionals who come together for six weeks annually to prepare this concert.  This year’s concert will feature Antoinette Sands, vocalist, and UAB’s Denise Gainey, D.M.A., clarinetist. Audience members will have the chance to win an opportunity to conduct the band playing “Stars and Stripes Forever” for the grand finale. UAB Gospel Choir Summer Concert
, 7 p.m., UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, 1200 10th Ave. South. A smaller summer Gospel Choir Ensemble directed by Kevin P. Turner will perform works that match its size by recording artists Kurt Carr, Tye Tribbett, Hezekiah Walker and J. Moss. A portion of the concert will be dedicated to gospel icons Daryl Coley, Ricky Dillard and the late, great Milton Brunson, founder of the Thompson Community Singers. The concert will have a Caribbean feel that the choir brought back from its recent U.S. Virgin Islands tour. The UAB Gospel Choir’s “Nu-Soul City” CD will be on sale immediately after the concert. Tickets are $6 and are on sale now at the Alys Stephens Center Box Office or by phone at 205-975-2787 or 205-943-8001. Tickets also will be available at the door on the day of the concert. UAB Marching Blazers Band Camp Show
, 7:30 p.m., on the UAB Campus Green, located between 14th and 16th streets South on University Boulevard. Be among the first to witness the reveal of the Marching Blazers’ 2013 show, featuring music of famous Alabama natives including Lionel Richie, Jimmy Buffett and Tommy Shaw of Styx. Bring chairs and blankets and see the Marching Blazers in action as they prepare for the upcoming Blazer Football season. Free.
