Doctoral hooding to be held May 12

UAB’s doctoral hooding ceremony will be held noon Saturday, May 12 in UAB’s Alys Stephens Center for 46 graduates — from 13 states and nine different countries, representing 24 disciplines — who will join the nation’s elite group of doctoral degree holders.

Louise Chow, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry and molecular genetics and senior scientist in our Comprehensive Cancer Center who recently was elected to the National Academy of Sciences for excellence in original scientific research, will be honored.

Rosa Serra, Ph.D., professor of cell biology and director of the cancer biology graduate program in Graduate Biomedical Sciences, will be the speaker. She will be honored with the Graduate Dean's Award for Excellence in Mentorship.

UAB will present Malcolm Portera, Ph.D., former chancellor of the University of Alabama System, with an honorary doctor of humanities degree.

Master's of engineering management degree will be offered.

Three programs change names

Programs in Health Professions, Engineering and Education schools change names.

More than 150 area middle-school girls will come to campus April 21 for the second Girls in Science & Engineering Day.

Grant will fund UAB pathobiology student's research for three years.
