UAB program grants literacy dollars to teachers

UAB writing program helps local teachers' initiatives.

The UAB Red Mountain Writing Project has awarded four Birmingham-area teachers funds to support projects related to “the teaching and learning of language and literacies in the classroom.” The awardees are a part of RMWP and will each receive $1,000 of materials.

red_mountain_storyThe Red Mountain Writing Project, led by Tonya Perry, Ph.D., is a local affiliate of the National Writing Project; its mission is to provide a forum for teachers of all grade levels and content areas to study and develop innovative strategies for literacy instruction.

The grant awardees are the following:

  • Nieshel Fall, Forest Hills Middle School in Fairfield, will use Amazon Kindles to improve student reading and writing.
  • Rod Leonard, Smith Middle School in Birmingham, will use iPads to improve male literacy.
  • Jameka Thomas, Davis Middle School in Bessemer, will use special materials to enhance instruction for high-performing social science students.
  • Kristie Thomas, Smith Middle School in Birmingham, will use Kindles to increase interaction and creation abilities among female students.
