The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s School of Dentistry is ranked first again in National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. The school has ranked first since 2012. The NIDCR reports more than $11 million in research funding was awarded to UAB in 2016.
“Our success stems from a robust emphasis on research within our strategic plan, specifically focused on four themes: biomaterials science/biomimetics, infection/host response, craniofacial development/genetics, and implementation science/clinical outcomes research,” said Michael S. Reddy, DMD, dean of the UAB School of Dentistry. “Building on that critical mass and developing additional themes will be a way to move forward in the future.”
The NIDCR is the federal government’s lead agency for scientific research on dental, oral and craniofacial health and disease, and is the nation’s leading funder of these areas. The NIDCR is one of the National Institutes of Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The NIDCR accounts for approximately half of the School of Dentistry's funding.
