UAB to host lecture series on treating Hispanic patients

Several campus groups will host a series of lectures on "Taking Care of the Hispanic Patient."

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the UAB School of Medicine’s Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs will partner with a medical student group, the Medical Spanish Interest Group, to host a series of lectures on “Taking Care of the Hispanic Patient.”

The keynote lecture will be delivered by Roy Germano, Ph.D., director of the film “The Other Side of Immigration,” a documentary that explores why Mexicans immigrate to the United States and what happens to the families and communities they leave behind.

The film will be screened at 6 p.m. on Oct. 4, 2011, in the Hill Center Alumni Auditorium.  Germano will conduct a question-and-answer session after the screening. The event is open to the public.

In addition, there will be four lectures for medical students, faculty and staff presented by UAB faculty from noon to 1 p.m. in lecture room D in Volker Hall.

Sept. 26 – Raquel Mazer, D.M.D., associate professor, School of Dentistry

Sept. 27 – Martin Cadeiras, M.D., assistant professor of medicine

Sept. 28 – Jose Fernandez, Ph.D., associate professor of nutrition sciences

Sept. 29 – Isabel Scarinci, M.D., professor of internal medicine
