UAB partners to present film series for Proust commemoration

This year is the centennial of Proust's "Swann's Way."

The UAB Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and the Alliance Française of Birmingham will commemorate the centennial of the publication of Marcel Proust’s “Swann’s Way” with a screening of French films and a culminating lecture Nov. 18-22, 2013.  “Swann’s Way” is the first volume of Proust’s classic “In Search of Lost Time.”

All movies will be themed around the writer’s works and shown at 7 p.m. in the University Blvd Office Building, 1201 University Blvd. The films will be in English or with English subtitles.

Before each film, Serge Bokobza, Ph.D., chair of Foreign Languages, and William Carter, Ph.D., distinguished professor emeritus and foremost Proust scholar, will give an introduction.

Here is the lineup:

Monday, Nov. 18“Céleste” (1981), directed by Percy Adlon and starring Eva Mattes and Jürgen Arndt.

Tuesday, Nov. 19“Swann in Love” (1984), directed by Volker Schlondorff  and starring Jeremy Irons, Ornella Muti and Alain Delon.

Wednesday, Nov. 20“La Captive” (2000), directed by Chantal Ackerman and starring Stanislas Merhar, Sylvie Testud and Olivia Bonamy.

Thursday, Nov. 21LeTemps retrouvé (1999), directed by Raoul Ruiz and starring Catherine Deneuve, Emmanuelle Béart, John Malkovitch and Vincent Perez.

Friday, Nov. 22“Marcel Proust: A Writer’s Life” (1993), documentary directed and co-produced by UAB’s William Carter.

Saturday, Nov. 23 – Lecture by William Carter
