The University of Alabama at Birmingham Student Multicultural and Diversity program will spotlight Women’s History Month in March with lectures, film screenings, community service, performances and more. Most events are free, and all are open to the public.
At 7 p.m. March 4, Emmy Award winner Marvelyn Brown will speak about her battle with HIV/AIDS, in Heritage Hall, Room 102, 1401 University Blvd. The event is presented by the UAB African American Studies Organization.
On March 8, UAB students will participate in Into the Streets: Day of Service, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. on the UAB Campus Green. This semiannual day of service is sponsored by the Leadership and Service Council; students, staff and faculty will participate in local community service projects.
On March 10 at 7 p.m., the American Association of University Women at UAB will sponsor a film screening of “Half the Sky,” followed by a discussion of the film, in Heritage Hall, Room 106. “Half the Sky” is a passionate call to arms urging people to bear witness to the plight of the world’s women and help transform oppression into opportunity. Refreshments will be served.
Also at 7 p.m. March 10, in UAB’s Edge of Chaos, Lister Hill Library, 1700 University Blvd., the UAB Lecture Series and the Black Student Awareness Committee will present Black Women’s Appreciation featuring Ashlee “Lola” Haze. This celebratory night of music, poetry and art will honor the sacrifices and contributions of African-American women. Spoken-word artist Haze is known for her literary works and public service on behalf of women.
On March 13, the UAB’s Women’s Center, Women’s and Gender Studies, and the Commission on the Status of Women will present the Outstanding Women’s Awards, which awards honors in categories including student, faculty member, staff member, administrator and community member. The event will begin at 4:45 p.m. in the UAB Alumni House, 1301 10th Ave. South.
The Multicultural Council will present a film screening at 6 p.m. March 17 of “The Double Life of Veronique,” in Heritage Hall, Room 126.
At 7 p.m. March 20, UAB Women’s and Gender Studies will present a diverse roundtable discussion, “Sex, Spatiality and Stereotype,” in Heritage Hall, Room 121. UAB Professor of History Pam Murray, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Foreign Language Lamia Benyoussef, Ph.D., and Assistant Professor of Healthcare Organization and Policy Henna Budhwani, Ph.D., with Stephanie Hendrick, formerly of Umeå University, Sweden, will participate, with moderation by Visiting Assistant Professor of Foreign Languages Patricia Penate, Ph.D.
At 6 p.m. March 31, the Women’s Rights Coalition at UAB will present “The Vagina Monologues,” the award-winning play by Eve Ensler that celebrates women’s sexuality and strength. The play will take place in UAB’s Blazer Hall Residence Life Center, 920 16th St. South. Admission is $10. Email cmelodis@uab.edu for tickets.
