spain rehab 1The University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation will dedicate the Nepomuceno Reflection Garden in front of Spain Rehabilitation Center, 1717 Sixth Ave. South at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13.

The Reflection Garden is a tribute and memorial to the life and service of Cecil Nepomuceno, M.D., a member of the department’s faculty from 1970 until his retirement in 1994. Dr. Nepo, as he was known, was a pioneer in rehabilitation medicine, in particular in musculoskeletal electromyography, or EMG. During his tenure at UAB, he was director of the EMG Lab in addition to caring for patients.

The UAB Retirees Association made a substantial charitable contribution in memory of Nepomuceno to the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation following his death in 2011, with a request that the contribution be used to create a space for patients and families to reflect. Nepomuceno’s family raised funds to complete the garden.
